When recently asked about traditional hand drawn animation, DreamWorks Animation Chief Creative Officer Bill Damaschke spoke about the hybrid animation in “Me and My Shadow”.He stated, “Me and My Shadow, which is out in spring of 2014, is a combination of CG and traditional hand drawn animation. There is a reason to tell the story in that fashion. It’s about what would happen if your shadow, that has been following you around and basically just follows what you do your whole life, just stood up and took over. The shadows will be animated hand drawn, and the other characters will be CG animated. There is a reason to do it [hand drawn animation] that felt creatively interesting.”

I’m kind of surprised at all the enthusiasm people are having for this recent spur of CG/traditional animation mixing (including Paperman, though I will admit that I am super excited for that).
Not to say that it isn’t beautiful, or to say anything bad about Dreamworks, who have really been churning out some great films lately. It’s just… not new? I mean, Disney has been mixing CG and traditional animation for a very long time now. Who can forget that beautiful ball sequence in Beauty and the Beast? Many other studios have followed. And television does it more and more often.
I dunno, I suppose it’s because the differences in the animations will be more prevalent, instead of being inconspicuous? Or advertising?
EDIT: Now that I think about it, it is very interesting that studios are using the differences in 2D and digital animation to enhance storytelling, rather than to expedite the animation process. Still… I dunno
